SHARING STORIES

is my passion

Hi, I’m Emily. I’ve been collecting stories my whole life. Growing up in north Alabama, where storytelling is as ubiquitous as sweet tea, I discovered early on that everyone has a story worth telling. As a teenager writing for my hometown newspaper, I fell in love with the art of interviewing and distilling what I learned into stories. More than 30 years later, that same curiosity continues to guide my work as a writer, editor and content strategist.

I believe the best stories do more than inform or entertain—they uplift, transform, and even heal. Helping uncover and share those stories is a privilege I’ve enjoyed for nearly three decades.

I’ve devoted my career to helping people, publications, businesses, nonprofits and communities get to the heart of the stories they want to tell and express them in clear, compelling and enduring ways. Over the years, I’ve worked across print and digital media, creating award-winning content for magazines, newsletters, books, websites, blogs, marketing campaigns and social platforms. I’ve collaborated with clients to develop projects for their target audiences, managing every stage from concept to production while leading editorial and design teams.

Much of my approach to storytelling was shaped by studying creative nonfiction at the University of Alabama, where I earned a master’s degree in journalism. I spent several years as a features editor at a local newspaper, developing sections aimed at increasing readership among teens and young adults, before moving to Nashville to work in custom publishing.

As a writer and editor at Hammock Inc., I helped create magazines, newsletters and digital content for national associations and organizations, including the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), HCA Healthcare, the Marine Corps League and the Army National Guard. I also served as managing editor of Hooah!, a recruiting magazine for the Guard that reached 6 million teens and was recognized as one of the year’s top magazine launches.

Later, as editor in the business publishing division of Journal Communications, I managed annual publications for chambers of commerce and economic development organizations nationwide, helping states, cities and communities tell stories to attract business, talent and investment.

In 2018, I launched my freelance business to focus on the work I love most: researching, interviewing, writing, editing and helping clients tell stories that move readers while advancing their mission. Since then, my work has appeared in digital and print publications, including Styleblueprint, Good Grit, American Spirit and Alabama Heritage. I’ve covered topics from history, culture and lifestyle to healthcare and business, and created B2B and B2C content for clients across industries. Along the way, my work has earned multiple APEX and MarCom awards for feature writing, but what means the most is hearing someone say, “You captured exactly what I wanted to say.”

Today, I live in Memphis with my husband, Robert, a photographer whose creative eye inspires my perspective on the world, and our precocious dog, Ofi, who stars in a children’s book series I’m currently writing. When I’m not working, you can find me practicing yoga, listening to soul music, experimenting with healthy new recipes or dancing around the kitchen with my husband.

I still believe what I learned growing up in Alabama: stories matter. They help us understand each other, remember what’s important and imagine what’s possible. Whether I’m writing a feature article, refining a manuscript or crafting a content strategy, my work always starts with listening. I uncover what matters most and shape it into stories that build trust, deepen connection and inspire action.

If you’re a publication searching for a seasoned writer, an organization seeking a thoughtful editor or a business needing strategic content, I’d love to help you tell your story well.
